Silverfish

silver fishSilverfish belong to the order Thysanura and are primitive insects. It is believed to be at least 28 species in Australia and 5 of those species have successfully invaded buildings.

Silverfish are nocturnal insects and are typically 13–25 mm (0.5–1 in) long. Their abdomens taper at the end, giving them a fish-like appearance. They have three long cerci at the tips of their abdomens, one off the end of their body, one facing left, and one facing right.

Silverfish are found almost anywhere particularly roof cavities, subfloors and wall voids. They feed on starchy materials (clothes), most types of human food, love paper and glue.

Ways to Prevent Silverfish in the Home

Silverfish are known for their destructive feeding habits, often ruining papers, clothing and wallpaper. They commonly infest in dark, damp areas around paper and linen sources. Silverfish infestations can be found in kitchens, laundry rooms, bathrooms, attics and basements.

Silverfish can survive in almost any environment, but they prefer areas with high humidity. Nymphs develop faster in areas that are humid. Therefore, one of the best ways to prevent an infestation is to control humidity.  Silverfish consume a variety of foods, and stringent housekeeping practices may help prevent an infestation by limiting potential feeding sites.

At Southcape Pest management we understand the habits of each of the many species of silverfish found in the south-west. We use that knowledge when developing a control program for your home.
